Dessau, Germany

Roughly 90 minutes from Berlin, the Bauhaus Museum Dessau is now open. If you have already seen all the sights in Berlin, this is the place to be. It’s located where the Elbe and Mulde rivers meet.

You can go on your own personal Bauhaus-themed pilgrimage. See a great group of white cubist houses known as the Meisterhäuser. It was here that Kandinsky, Gropiusm and other famous Bauhaus figures once resided.

Egypt

This is the best time to visit Egypt because the much-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum opens in Giza. The museum will be the planet’s second-largest museum and the biggest one dedicated to one civilization. The museum spans more than five million square feet.
It cost $1.1 billion to build. Go exploring. Take a cruise on the Nile then visit the temples of Luxor and the olden tombs in the Valley of Kings.

Rome, Italy

2020 marks Italy’s commemoration of the death of the Renaissance artist Raphael. The biggest exhibition will be seen in Rome. it was here that he spent the final ten years of his life creating a number of frescoes at the well-known Vatican and additional palazzos, at the famous Scuderie del Quirinale. Other highlights include the Church of Sant’Agostino, Villa Farnesina, and Villa Madama. Stay at one of the new luxury hotels too.

Queensland, Australia

The best time to visit is in April. That’s when the Museum of Underwater Art will officially launch its first artwork in the popular Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Future installations by Jason deCaires Taylor, the top underwater sculptor, and other local artists will be located between four different locations. All of the artwork will call attention to the subject of ocean conservation. Stay at the newly-opened InterContinental Hayman Island too.

Dubai, UAE

Attend the Middle East’s first world expo named Expo 2020 Dubai. There will be a huge celebration of creativity, culture, and innovation. It will run for half a year and play host to 25 million attendees.

The Museum of the Future will surely be a favorite of anyone interested in inventions and prototypes. There’ll be talks, workshops, and interactive displays. See all the sights from Earth’s highest observation wheel, Ain Dubai.

Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech has been deemed the premiere African Capital of Culture. This city is said to be a true haven of architecture, art, culture, and design. It is also where you will discover two official UNESCO World Heritage sites, Djemaa El Fna and the media. You can also visit the recently-opened Yves Saint Laurent Museum which was reportedly designed by Studio KO

Dubrovnik, Croatia

According to Virtuoso’s 2020 Luxe Report, this spot is the official number one emerging destination. History buffs will like the historic city center which was bombed during the infamous Croatian War of Independence. If you don’t like crowds then it’s best to visit any other time of the year but summer. Still, Summer is the best time to visit if you’d like to explore the Elaphiti Islands. Kenya

Visit Kenya and see the 2020 Great Migration. Kenya is also known as “East Africa’s classic safari destination.” You can now fly directly from 11 US and four Canadian cities to Nairobi via Kenya Airways’ partnership with Delta.

Luang Prabang, Laos

In 2020 Luang Prabang will officially celebrate 25 years of being a UNESCO World Heritage site. Research Buddhist culture. See the melding of traditional Buddhist and French colonial architecture. Learn all about traditional Laotian crafts such as weaving. Stay at the newly-opened Avani+ Luang Prabang. Ensconced in the heart of the city, it is within walking distance of beautiful temples, charming restaurants, Mount Phousi, and even the mighty Mekong River.

The Maldives

Consisting of 1900 atoll islands, the Maldives is reportedly experiencing “a major design moment” that has already gained the attention of the jet-setting crowd. Residents have also been working on sustainability initiatives since the 1980s. 2020 could be the year they celebrate becoming “carbon neutral.” The official lowest-lying country in the world, the Maldives will also have several new resorts opening including the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, Kudadoo Maldives, and Anantara Kihava

Washington, D.C., USA

The day-tour company Urban Adventures expects a significant spike in interest in the US capital. Experts note it’s due to more than the upcoming election. They believe it’s due to the new and renovated hotels, the revitalized waterfront, exceptional museums, and a great restaurant scene that’s hotter than it’s ever been. Must-try restaurants will include Officina with its Michelin-starred celeb chef Nicholas Stefanelli, the critically-acclaimed Maydan and the new French eatery the Pembroke.

Greenland

Greenland is now in the spotlight because it is thought to be the next location for “climate change.” Top tour operators report a rise in interest in the massive Arctic Circle island known as Greenland. There will be many tours available in 2020.

For example, Abercrombie & Kent will have a 15-day Ultimate Iceland and Greenland Cruise departing August 2020. Ponant, a French company, is offering a 15-day sailing trip along the unexplored eastern coast.

Anguilla

By 2020 Anguilla will be fully recovered from both hurricanes Irma and Maria. A couple of the island’s most luxurious popular resorts are reopening: CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa, and Belmond Cap Juluca. The well-known Malliouhana has added a number of improvements including a beachfront restaurant, new rooms, a much-improved spa, and even a pool that overlooks Meads Bay. You can even take a winter island-hopping trip and visit nearby St. Bart’s as well.

Bangkok, Thailand

According to the people at Mastercard, Bangkok slotted in as the “most visited city in the world” this year. It was visited by almost 23 million tourists. Go see the Buddhist temples and attend the second Bangkok Art Biennale and enjoy public exhibitions of contemporary Thai art and the work of international artists too. Many hotels have been renovated too including the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, the Rosewood Bangkok, and the Waldorf Astoria Bangkok

Maine, USA

Maine celebrates its bicentennial next year complete with exhibitions, festivals, parades, and more. Highlights include such as the statewide Statehood Weekend (March 14th and 15th), the Auburn/Lewiston Bicentennial Parade (May 16th), Portland’s big Summer Coast Festival (July 3 through the 10th)t, and finally the huge statewide Grand Finale Weekend (October 9th through the 12th). Start in the city of Portland then going to the popular Acadia National Park located on Mount Desert Island.

Bodrum, Turkey

Also known as Turquoise Coast, this is said to be “the next great beach destination.” Situated on the Aegean coast, this is a great non-touristy option to the Amalfi Coast and the Greek Islands. Explore the 600 miles of multi-colored coastline.

Bolivia

Get off the touristy path right here. Experience the world’s biggest salt flat named Salar de Uyuni. This is said by some to be the Earth’s most surreal and remote landscapes and now it is easily accessible. Stay at the newly-opened Kachi Lodge.  Sources at Embark say it’s a “seven-dome luxury camp” and the first of its kind in “the wilds of Bolivia” that will provide visitors to explore this place “like never before.”

Costa Rica

Costa Rica has great beaches, especially for surfers. In 2020, though you can be part of the burgeoning experiential travel movement by staying at the new Nayara Tented Camp. The first-ever in Central America, it includes 29 luxury safari camp-like tents and a low-impact design meant to respect the rainforest. It is in sync with Costa Rica’s sustainability plan, which has the goal of attaining 100 percent renewable energy by the year 2030.
