10 Most Affordable Winter Vacations in the US

Do you need a break from current events?  Are you looking for a winter break that you can afford?  Fret not, fellow traveler.  We’ve gathered information from Hotels.com and other sources to present you with the 10 most affordable winter vacations in the US.

1.  Breckenridge, Colorado

Colorado has some of the best ski resorts in the US such as Vail, Telluride, and Steamboat Springs.  If you’re on a budget though, your best bet is Breckenridge.  This quaint town is reported to have everything needed for the perfect ski vacation.

Here you can ski the slopes of 187 separate trails across five different peaks.  Ride the popular Gold Runner Alpine Coaster then explore historic downtown Breckenridge.  Rest up at the well-known Gravity Haus, the hip and trendy ski-in/ski-out hotel, or the 45-room  Lodge at Breckenridge, which features exceptional mountain views.

2.  Park City, Utah

Park City is also a favorite U.S. ski destination that is said to have something for everyone.  This place is family-friendly and with more than 330 ski trails, it’s even a great place for first-time skiers.  When you’ve had enough of the slopes, you can stroll around the city and check out all the different choices of shops and eateries available within the three villages there — Canyons Village, Mountain Village, and Old Town.  Veteran visitors suggest staying at the famous Zermatt Utah Resort & Spa Trademark Collection by Wyndham or the Newpark Resort.

3.  Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Enjoy great skiing in a wonderfully scenic part of the US.  Yes, the mountains offer you the opportunity to hit the fresh-powdered slopes and terrific terrain.  But there’s a lot more to do here besides ski.

Visit the National Elk Refuge, where thousands of elk winter, or explore the great Grand Teton National Park.  Take a 90-mile trip to the south entrance of Yellowstone National Park too.  This winter vacation is a perfect blend of outdoor adventure and winter sports.  Stay at The Wyoming Inn of Jackson Hole or The Lodge at Jackson Hole.

4.  Miami, Florida

5.  San Diego, California

Yes, it might be a bit too cold to swim in the ocean, but there are still many things to do here in the winter.  Despite the temperate winter weather here you can still take a walk and soak in the SanDiego scenery.  You can still enjoy such outdoor activities as biking, hiking, or visiting the popular San Diego Zoo.  When it comes to affordable accommodations near assorted attractions in the downtown area, veteran visitors recommend booking your stay at The Sofia Hotel or the Kimpton Hotel Palomar San Diego.

6.  Las Vegas, Nevada

You don’t have to be a gambler to have a good time in “Sin City.”  It offers a lot of interesting attractions.  You can walk through the finely-decorated casinos along the famous Strip, check out the thematic stores, and even explore the nearby parks such as Red Rock Canyon.  It’s less than a two-hour drive to the west rim of the famous Grand Canyon too.  Stay at the Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa, the popular NoMad Las Vegas, or the historic LINQ Hotel and Casino–reputedly one of the cheapest hotels in the world.

7.  Key West, Florida

The winter highs here in Key West in the Straits of Florida easily broach the 70s.  Indeed, the famous  Florida Keys offers a truly tropical getaway right in the USA.  Take a cruise along the state’s 113-mile Overseas Highway — one of America’s most scenic drives.  

Then enjoy exploring the isle’s beautiful beaches and palm tree-lined streets too.  You’ll find many historic attractions that you can take in for free as part of self-guided walking tours.  Several local historical societies even provide brochures and audio tour information.  Book a room at The Gates Hotel Key West or Kimpton Winslow’s Bungalows.

8.  Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix is a great place to escape the cold!  This US city has dry winter weather and sun all year long.  Take a bike ride or hike as you explore the stunning Sonoran Desert.  Stop and take a close look at the well-known saguaro cacti. 

History buffs should drop by the educational Heard Museum, see the impressive Native American art, and learn a bit about the local cultures.  Appreciate exceptional architecture? Tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home, Taliesin West.  Visit the cliff dwellings at Montezuma Castle National Monument, red rock-surrounded Sedona.  Stay at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix.

9.Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Some call this US city “the gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  This city is a great place to visit any time of the year.  Visit here in winter and take a frosty, refreshing hike through the park here.  Hit the slopes at Ober Gatlinburg, and do some snowboarding and skiing there.  Take a ride on one of the local alpine coasters too,  Stay at The Park Vista or Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort & Spa for some great rates.

10.Lake Tahoe, California And Nevada

Famous Lake Tahoe spans the states of Nevada and California.  It’s surrounded by a number of different ski and lake resorts that offer visitors a wide range of enjoyable activities suitable for each season.  Travel experts suggest a stay at The Landing Resort & Spa which is suitably close to the Heavenly Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe. 

It’s there that visitors can take advantage of the 4,800 skiable acres.  There’s also the popular Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort which you’ll find in attractive Incline Village, Nevada, near the Diamond Peak Ski Resort.  Wherever you stay, the scenic 72-mile drive around the lake is lovely.
